    Honai is a traditional house from the highland of West Papua. Along her journey, she

    has been built by our crew Lober Wainggai and Gillius Kogoya

    The Honai was built opposite the Indonesian consulate in Melbourne for the December 1st Rally in 2016

    The Honai was built at the Earth Embassy protest on world environment day 2015 next to Victorian Parlement

     

    The Honai was erected by Lober and Peter Bagawaak as part of the Darwin West Papua Freedom Forum 2015 It spent a night on the the lawns of NT Parlement and moved to the front of the Indonesian consulate 

     

    The Honai was constructed for The Change in Collingwood 2017 and here in this photo at Lot 19 in Castlemaine 2018

    The lizard car inspired by the lizard …….‘Beneath the Roxby Downs Uranium mine, there is an old Sleepy Lizard named Kulta. BHP’s Olympic Dam mine is digging right into its guts to extract the world’s most poisonous ore. Uranium! That Lizard ain’t so sleepy no more…’ Mad Max meets dreamtime in a post-apocalyptic reincarnation of Kulta The Lizard Car.

    The Lizard Car is a living work of art. Currently in its third incarnation, it was originally created to protest uranium mining in Roxby Downs and to raise awareness of First Nations sovereignty.

    It has travelled the country, been impounded by the police, and is currently being used in the revolutionary hip-hop musical The Change. It exemplifies the idea of using art as a tool to create social change.

    I did some sketches of the change, in Castlemaine, mostly during rehearsals. I’m so impressed with everyone, and how truly unique each of the stories or acts are. Drawing the crew performing, I attempted to express my appreciation of their skills and personhood. I also attempted to capture some of the beautiful memories from the whole experience.

    Wa Canoe Travelling with a Message : The 1st of May 2018 the Aboriginal Tent Embassy Supporters and Free West Papua supporters came in solidarity with Wa Canoe and did a full lap around the Parliament House to remind the Australian government of the Papuan bloods on their hands through their foreign policies in early 60s that have continued to terrorised the livelihood and suppressed the aspirations of the Papuan’s right to self-determination.

    The 1st of May is known as the ‘Day of Terror’ which commemorates the day that the illegal Indonesian occupation of West Papua began in 1963. The occupation continues to this day and the right to self-determination of the West Papuan people continues to be violated. The Australian Government is complicit in this through funding and training the Indonesian police and military including Detachment 88.

    To raise awareness about the ongoing human rights violations in West Papua and to draw attention to this slow motion genocide on our door step. The West Papuan community, Aboriginal Tent Embassy and their supporters launched the Wa Canoe for Freedom at The Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. The canoe travels with a message to be delivered to the Australian and Indonesian Governments. Join us as we journey to Parliament in Canberra.

    Built by Lober Wainggai and decorated by Amos Wainggai, the canoe is a replica of the one that arrived on Australian shores in 2006 carrying 43 West Papuan refugees, five of whom have travelled to Canberra with the canoe. The Wa Canoe represents the West Papuan people’s cry for help to regain independence from Indonesian occupation, and represents the struggle and hardships of West Papuan people.

    We call on:
    the Australian Government to stop supporting the Indonesian security forces.
    the Indonesian Governent to stop killing West Papuans. We call for justice for the families and communities of the victims of state violence.
    the International community to put pressure on the Indonesian Government to stop violating the rights of the West Papuan people

    Preparations are underway! Phase 2 of The Change! After a successful first round of fabulousness that bought together over 40 participants to create magic that left the audience crying and dancing at the preview at The Factory in Richmond, we begun work on developing the rest of the script and beyond!The Change- Evolution to Revolution will be an interactive performance taking the audience on an epic journey. The Collingwood Estate’s Underground car park will be transformed in to many worlds for you to explore.

    United Struggle Project Presents ‘The Change’ Revolutionary Hip-hop Theatre. A journey of many worlds colliding- From West Papuan refugees on a boat lost at sea to the kids in the shanty town of tin in an African slum, the Palestinian rappers up against the apartheid wall and the Afghan girl on the run, these characters journeys will run parallel with the stories of struggle of the First Nations people of Australia.
    In this fusion of cultures and historical political events beginning at lake eyre protest camp in S.A, traveling to the Aboriginal tent embassy Canberra to Palm Island QLD, and coming together at Woomera detention centre. These are the events that will shape the future, and bring the characters fleeing from all over the world to come together round a camp fire in the desert to plot and scheme for the ‘change.’ The story is told through the children of the future that are recalling there ancestors adventures that lead to the prevention of the world from destruction.
    The dialogue will address issues of colinization racism police and military brutality. This social commentary humour personal stories and utopian visions will be served on a deadly sound track of hip-hop, traditional and world music with live band accomplishment to a background of incredible sets ..A series of workshops to develop the script with the actors and explore ideas of the ‘change’ we want to bring.. open to people to bringing there own stories of survival an visions for the future. We are looking for performers of Indigenous, Middle East and African backgrounds actors dancers and singers to get involved in the working creation. We are also looking for musicians set designers lighting and production people to engage in the creative …

    Background- Director Izzy Brown : The characters are based on artist that I had the honour to meet and record on my travels doing hip-hop workshops in remote aboriginal communities, refugee camps, slums, prisons and war zones. The scenes set in Australia are based loosely on historical political events that I had the accidental honour to witness and participate in. Through workshops we have developed the skript with the Melbourne based paticipents incorporating there talent and perspectives. These experiences have shaped my life and opened my eyes to many of the injustices of the world but also to the hope and power found in music and action to create change.
